What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a medically supervised skin treatment that uses sterile, fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the skin's natural repair response, encouraging new collagen and elastin formation over the following weeks.

At Elegance Aesthetic Clinic by Dr. Prem, microneedling is planned according to your skin tone, acne activity, scar type and treatment goal. The same device setting is not suitable for every face. Acne scars, pores, fine lines and stretch marks all need different depth selection and aftercare.

It is not only an acne scar treatment. PRP microneedling and microneedling with selected serums can also be used as an alternative to routine facials when the goal is collagen stimulation, anti-ageing support, skin firmness, pigmentation support, wrinkle softening and glow.

What Microneedling Helps With

  • Rolling acne scars and selected shallow boxcar scars
  • Uneven skin texture after acne or congestion
  • Enlarged-looking pores where firmer surrounding skin can help refine appearance
  • Early fine lines, mild wrinkles and anti-ageing support
  • Mild skin laxity where collagen support can make skin look firmer
  • Selected pigmentation concerns such as uneven tone or post-acne marks as part of a pigment-safe plan
  • Selected stretch marks where repeated collagen stimulation may help

Acne Scars: What Microneedling Can and Cannot Do

Microneedling can improve many depressed acne scars, but scar type matters. Rolling scars usually respond better than deep ice-pick scars. If scars are tethered down, subcision may be needed before the surface texture can improve properly.

If the main concern is dark post-acne marks rather than dents, a pigment-focused plan such as skincare, sun protection and chemical peels for pigmentation may be more useful than microneedling alone.

Microneedling with PRP

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, can be added to microneedling when the goal is stronger collagen stimulation, acne scar revision or recovery support. A small blood sample is processed, and the platelet-rich portion is used with the treatment.

PRP is not mandatory for every patient. It is also discussed for patients who want a regenerative alternative to repeated routine facials, especially when concerns include dullness, early anti-ageing changes, fine lines, mild skin tightening, uneven tone, and texture.

Because PRP uses the patient's own plasma, it reduces reliance on routine cosmetic facial products or fragrance-heavy skincare steps. It still does not make the treatment risk-free; redness, irritation, infection, pigmentation changes, cold sore flares or product sensitivity can still occur, so sterile technique and medical assessment remain important.

Microneedling with Regenerative Serums

Depending on your concern, Dr. Prem may recommend PRP on its own, PRP with hyaluronic acid, exosomes, PDRN, or stem-cell-derived or growth factor serums during a microneedling plan. These are selected clinically rather than used like routine home skincare.

These add-ons are selected only after consultation, based on product suitability, sterility, source, skin sensitivity, and clinical judgement.

PRP Supports collagen stimulation, recovery, glow, scar improvement and early anti-ageing concerns.
PRP with Hyaluronic Acid Adds hydration support for smoother texture, plumper-looking skin and a fresher glow when suitable.
Exosomes Selected cell-free regenerative serums may support repair signalling, firmness and skin quality.
PDRN Often known as salmon DNA in aesthetic treatments, PDRN may support repair, elasticity and rejuvenation.
Stem-cell-derived serums Growth factor style serums may be discussed for collagen support, firmness and overall skin regeneration.

  • Skin infection, open wounds or cold sores
  • Uncontrolled eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis on the area

  • Avoid makeup for 24 hours unless cleared by the clinic
  • Avoid scrubs, retinoids, exfoliating acids and strong actives until advised
  • Avoid sun exposure, sauna, steam and intense workouts immediately after treatment
  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen once your clinician says it is appropriate

Additional Tips & Recommendations

  • Control active acne before starting scar-focused microneedling
  • Use photos and review points to track gradual scar and texture improvement
  • Consider PRP when acne scars, recovery support, collagen stimulation, glow or anti-ageing support are key goals
  • Discuss PRP with hyaluronic acid, exosomes, PDRN or stem-cell-derived serums if hydration, firmness, repair support or skin quality is the priority
  • Use daily sun protection to reduce pigmentation risk after treatment
  • Plan maintenance sessions only after your initial course has been reviewed

Microneedling is often combined with PRP subcision for scars, chemical peels, and fractional CO2 laser when scars, texture and pigmentation need a staged plan. For regenerative skin quality goals, PRP, PRP with hyaluronic acid, exosomes, PDRN or stem-cell-derived serums may be selected with microneedling when suitable.

FAQ

Microneedling is useful for many depressed acne scars, especially rolling scars and some shallow boxcar scars. Deep ice-pick scars, tethered scars or raised scars may need combination treatment.

Microneedling can support selected pigmentation concerns, fine lines, mild wrinkles, texture, pores and skin firmness by stimulating collagen. A consultation is needed because pigmentation and laxity may need a combined plan.

Many patients need 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Acne scars and stretch marks usually need more sessions than a general texture treatment.

Some freshness may appear once redness settles, but scar and texture improvement builds gradually over weeks to months as collagen remodels.

Yes. Depending on your skin, options may include PRP, PRP with hyaluronic acid, exosomes, PDRN, or stem-cell-derived or growth factor serums. These are selected by the clinic and should not be replaced with random home serums after treatment.

For selected patients, yes. PRP microneedling focuses on collagen stimulation and uses the patient's own platelet-rich plasma rather than standard facial products. It still needs consultation, sterile technique and aftercare.

It can be suitable for medium to deeper Sri Lankan skin tones, but settings and aftercare matter. Pigmentation risk is reduced by treating conservatively and protecting the skin from sun exposure.

Usually no. Active inflammatory acne should be controlled first to reduce irritation, infection risk and future scarring.

Redness, tightness, mild swelling and dryness can occur for 1-3 days. Deeper scar treatments may take longer to settle.

The cost depends on treatment area, scar severity, number of sessions, whether PRP is added, and whether subcision, peels or laser are needed. A consultation gives the most accurate estimate.
